Lexi’s background is in literature and writing, so perhaps it follows that her dolls begin with a character or a story. From that point, the image of the doll begins to take shape—first in thought and then, with a little luck, in clay between her fingers. On rare occasions, the doll she envisions is fully realized in clay. Often, however, the narrative changes to suit the little figure as the doll, seeming sure of whom it’s meant to be, just sort of makes itself.
Under the Ooak Tree Dolls are one-of-a-kind, pure-sculpt dolls made from polymer clay. Some are fully sculpted; others are made with poseable soft bodies. Most (though not all) belong in the world of the little folk—faeries, brownies, elves, and the like.
Lexi began making dolls in 1992, after seeing two fantastic dolls on a vendor’s blanket at an outdoor market in the city of Bruges, Belgium. She only saw them fleetingly, out of the corner of an eye, but that little glimpse has been enough to kindle a lasting passion.
